“While I share the concern that businesses are not paying the taxes owed, the problem with collecting payroll taxes on construction projects is more severe,” said O’Dea, who got the city to investigate payroll taxes at 88 Regent St. about 14 months ago.

He added that around the same time, he raised questions about taxes never paid at a construction project on Grand Street.

The strike is in protest of the company’s stalled contract negotiations that have lasted over two years, and other workplace issues and union-busting efforts. This is the first walk-out in the magazine’s history.

The NewsGuild of New York, which represents nearly 6,000 media professionals and other employees, filed an unfair labor practice charge on behalf of the Forbes Union last week. Forbes Magazine moved its headquarters to Jersey City in 2014 and received a $27 Million Grow New Jersey tax credit.
