This past Saturday marked a monumental milestone for the South Hudson Civic Association (SHCA) as they celebrated the 40th anniversary of their holiday toy drive. Held at the Moose Lodge on West Side Avenue, the event brought together members of the community, dedicated volunteers, and local organizations to spread holiday cheer in Jersey City.
Since its inception, the SHCA’s annual toy drive has brightened the holidays for thousands of local children and families. This year, the organization attracted over 400 people to the toy drive, continuing their proud tradition of generosity and community spirit. Guests of all ages helped themselves to a hot and cold buffet to enjoy while they participated in various activities, such as karaoke and pictures with Santa.
O’Dea also went into what inspired him to create this event many years ago: “I used to attend a similar event when I was younger and it was hosted by ‘Willie’ Wolfe at P.S. 8.” He refers to former freeholder and county sheriff William “Willie” Wolfe whose yearly Christmas toy drive was the stuff of legends in Jersey City Heights for over 50 years. Wolfe passed away in 2006 but the Christmas spirit that Wolfe wove into the community continues to inspire O’Dea to give back during this special time of year.
“This event has always been about giving back to the community and ensuring every child feels the joy of the holiday season,” said Commissioner Bill O'Dea, founder and standard bearer of the SHCA. “Forty years later, it’s incredible to see the outpouring of support from volunteers, community members, and our partners. This is truly a team effort and we look forward to this time of year, all year.”
The event was attended by numerous supporters, including volunteers, community members, and representatives from government organizations such as the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office. Their combined efforts ensured that the event was a resounding success and that every family in attendance could enjoy a festive and memorable experience. Through initiatives like these, they have not only strengthened the bonds within the community but also brought hope and joy to countless families over the years.
